Bet On Sports, the gambling site on the Internet that has recently made so many headlines, is shuttering the majority of its billion-dollar operations and will ban any bets from the United States. This recent announcement goes hand-in-hand with the developments of the case being fought against the gambling company by federal prosecutors in Washington and Missouri.
For prosecutors, the move on behalf of the gambling site was seen as a true victory. Bet On Sports was predicted, both by industry experts and a company insider, to ignore the federal criminal prosecution and civil efforts to close down the company's US operations. According to Kevin Smith, a spokesman for the gambling company, 80 percent of the company's business came from US customers, with the rest originating in Asian markets. The decision will also affect nearly 800 employees, at least 90 percent of whom worked in Costa Rica.
With this being what some are calling the largest prosecution of a gambling company operating through the Internet, many believe this will set an example for gambling companies who do business solely on the World Wide Web to re-examine their policies and either stop operating or make sure they are not breaking any laws. What will happen at the end of this long legal process with Bet On Sports is still unknown. What is certain, however, is that the fight against illegal gambling continues on.
